Moving to Cyprus: start with your tax residency position

Moving to Cyprus: start with your tax residency position
The questions and documents to consider before planning your move.
Cyprus tax residency can arise under the 183-day rule or the 60-day route, subject to the relevant conditions. A residence permit, tax residency and non-domicile status are separate matters; each needs its own assessment.
Before making plans, prepare a record of your travel dates, details of your home in Cyprus, your employment or business arrangements and your tax position in other countries. These help establish which route may apply and what evidence is needed.
Non-domicile status requires a separate review of your domicile and residence history. Its implications should be considered alongside the type and source of your income.

Setting up a Cyprus company: look beyond incorporation
Plan the practical requirements from the outset.
Incorporation is the beginning of a company’s setup. A Cyprus company must also register with the Tax Department, and its registrations and ongoing obligations should reflect the activities it will carry on.
Prepare the proposed ownership and management structure, a clear description of the business, expected transactions and source-of-funds information. This helps us plan the corporate documents and bank application.
Our setup checklist also considers VAT where applicable, employer registration if staff will be hired, accounting arrangements and the company’s corporate records. Keeping these tasks coordinated makes the transition from registration to operation easier.
IP Box: build the evidence alongside the product
Ownership, development costs and income need a clear trail.
IP Box: build the evidence alongside the product
Ownership, development costs and income need a clear trail.
IP Box eligibility involves more than owning software. The assessment considers the qualifying asset, the income attributable to it and the research and development expenditure connected to its creation.
The nexus approach links the qualifying profit to development expenditure. Work performed by the company, outsourcing to unrelated parties, related-party development and acquisition costs can affect that calculation differently.
Our practical starting point is a product description, evidence of ownership, employee and subcontractor agreements, development records and an accounting breakdown linking costs and income to the product. Building that file from the outset supports a more complete assessment and, where appropriate, a tax ruling application.
